Party night for girls
Cancer Council Victoria is calling on women in Moonee Valley to register to host a Girls' Night In and show their support for the 94 local women expected to be diagnosed with breast or gynaecological cancer this year. The premise of Girls' Night In is for women to register as hosts, invite friends over for a fun night in and ask them to donate to the Cancer Council what they would have spent on a night out. The aim is to raise $1.4 million this year and recruit 4735 Girls' Night In hosts. Forty-seven have registered in Moonee Valley and the Cancer Council is urging more residents to get involved. To register a Girls' Night In, call 1300 65 65 85 or visit girlsnightin.com.au
Shutterbugs get more time
The deadline for entries in the Capture the Cover photographic competition has been extended to November 2, giving Moonee Valley residents more time to capture their community for the cover of their next Yellow Pages book. Budding photographers or people who just enjoy taking photos can upload their original images to CapturetheCover.com. The theme is Through the Eyes of a Local. Ten images will feature on the western region cover, with one major prize of either an iPad or Canon EOS 1100 digital SLR on offer and nine runner-up prizes of $50 cash up for grabs.
Council calls for volunteers
Moonee Valley Council is encouraging residents to donate their time and become a volunteer. Chief executive Neville Smith says the council has relied on the contribution of its volunteers. The council has about 400 dedicated volunteers who have spent 16,000 hours helping out in a number of ways around the community. "Their work has resulted in around $316,000 in savings to ratepayers." There are many volunteer opportunities within the council that fit a wide range of interests and time availability. "Volunteering is also a great way to gain personal rewards, including developing a broad range of new skills. Most importantly, it's a chance to make a meaningful, positive impact on your community."
