EDFL: Pascoe Vale a step closer to top prize

07 Sep, 2010 01:00 AM

ALAS, the sequel was just as one-sided as the original.

Pascoe Vale powered past Westmeadows by 46 points at Coburg City Oval on Saturday to set up an Essendon District Football League B-grade grand final clash against Taylors Lakes this weekend.

Just a fortnight after kicking 3.2 (20) against the Panthers in the qualifying final, Westmeadows failed to trouble the scorers after half-time as it fell 9.11 (65) to 3.1 (19).

A range of incidents in a firey first half had Westmeadows captain Roden Aldridge in the book twice and sensationally ordered from the field by the umpires at the start of the third quarter to sit out the rest of the game.

Having been jumped by early Pascoe Vale goals in the first quarter, Westmeadows made a fist of the contest with a second-quarter double to James Palmer and goal to Robert Mullen closing the gap to just 14 points at half-time.

But that was as close as Westmeadows would get for the rest of the match, with Pascoe Vale's Corey Bannister and Brad Morris winning the ball regularly in the Panthers' forward line and making it count on the scoreboard.

Pascoe Vale's midfield unit of David James, Jack O'Rourke and Dan O'Sullivan won the ball and crucially used the ball well, while Harley Ryan was a standout rebounding off half-back whenever Westmeadows tried to attack.

A pair of late goals in the third quarter sent Pascoe Vale to the last change up by 35, with a forgettable last quarter yielding just one Panther goal.

"It was always going to be a slog, the game plan went out the window and we used the bench a fair bit," Pascoe Vale coach David Morgan said.

"We made sure we were right for next week. No injuries today, we'll go to the beach and have a light night ready for the grand final."

Westmeadows struggled to break the lines and escape its own defensive half and spent much of the third and final quarter struggling to clear defensive 50m. "You can't be too critical, we didn't play our best football but the effort was there and that's all you can really ask," Westmeadows coach Anthony Leydin said.

Pascoe Vale will take on Taylors Lakes in the B-grade grand final to be played at Windy Hill on Saturday from 2.15pm.

Commentary of the game will be on North West 98.9 FM from 2pm
