Baseball Victoria: Bombers on Cats' tail

24 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
ESSENDON remains in hot pursuit of Geelong at the top of Baseball Victoria Summer League division 1 after a 7-4 win against Fitzroy in Greensborough on Saturday.

The Bombers' 16-3-1 trails Geelong (15-2-1) on win percentage as the top two continue to distance themselves from the chasing pack.

Essendon led 5-0 against last-placed Fitzroy before some fight from the 2-15 outfit made the Bombers earn the win.

Victory keeps Essendon clear of third-placed Melbourne (13-4) and fourth-placed Waverley (13-6-1) with 11 rounds to play until finals.

In the Australian Baseball League, the Flemington-based Melbourne Aces were going down to the wire chasing a play-off berth in their home series with Canberra Cavalry.

The Aces beat the Cavalry 10-9 on Saturday to go into Sunday's fifth and deciding game with four teams tied from second to fifth (Adelaide, Canberra, Melbourne, Sydney).

Canberra beat Melbourne 5-2 in front of 1500 people at the Showgrounds on Friday night to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match series.
