Trugo fever strikes again in Ascot Vale

WHAT can be more Australian than playing trugo on Australia Day?

Last Thursday, the Ascot Vale Trugo Club held a much-awaited open day to bring new life and exposure to the great suburban game.

The Ascot Vale club has been in hiatus for three years but, under club president Michael Greenway's stewardship, efforts are being made to restore interest in the sport and have a local team ready to play this season starting in August.

Trugo was invented at the Newport railway workshops in the 1920s and is a unique game played only in suburban Melbourne.

The game involves hitting a rubber doughnut-shaped ring with a mallet so the ring rolls along a grass court through goalposts.

For more information on trugo or to join the Ascot Vale club, call 0401 800 811 or contact ascotvaletrugoclub@bigpond.com
