OPPOSITION to a Victoria Racing Club proposal to move its 80-machine gaming venue to Epsom Road is gaining momentum, according to a residents group.
The Flemington Association started a campaign last weekend to inform residents about the club's plans to move its gaming venue to within 500metres of a housing commission complex.
Association member Jennie Gallivan manned an information stand at Newmarket railway station last week and said an overwhelming majority of residents she told about the move strongly opposed it.
"It would be right in the middle of a number of public housing estates and with it being open from 7am to 3am, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday [as is proposed], there is a lot of opposition to the disturbance it would cause. It would contribute nothing to the community, just profit to the VRC - people think it's really not going to help the neighbourhood."
The VRC lodged its proposal with the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation on December 24. It has not submitted a planning application to the Department of Planning and Community Development. A hearing date has not been set.
Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt has also voiced his concern, saying the relocation would increase problem gambling in the community.
"The increased accessibility of the poker machines is concerning as it enables people to play more frequently and risk greater losses."
The Productivity Commission has found annual gaming machine losses for a pokies player average about $3100 in Victoria.
