New Aussies can also enrol to vote

24 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
ALONG with the hundreds of barbecues taking place across the municipality for Australia Day this Thursday, Moonee Valley Council will host a citizenship ceremony for new residents to be sworn in as 'Aussies'.

The ceremony will be at the Moonee Ponds Clocktower Centre, with family and friends of those being sworn in welcome to attend.

The Australian Electoral Commission is also taking the opportunity this Australia Day to encourage Australia's new citizens to enrol to vote.

AEC Maribyrnong division manager Betty Brown said it was 100 years ago that the federal electoral system was changed so that all citizens were obliged to enrol to vote - and 50 years since indigenous Australians gained the right to vote.

"In this anniversary year, it is especially important that our newest citizens take up an important privilege of citizenship by enrolling to vote at their very first opportunity."

AEC staff will be on hand at citizenship ceremonies to help new citizens enrol.

The Clocktower Centre is at 750 Mt Alexander Road, Moonee Ponds.
