IT was in 1996 that Essendon resident Jenny McKimm-Breschkin first cycled to work at Royal Parade.
It was done out of the blue at the time, but 15 years later Mrs McKimm-Breschkin can hardly imagine commuting to work any other way.
"I get on the Moonee Ponds Creek path at Moreland Road and stay on it until just before Ormond Road," she says.
"I cross the creek using the bridge to get to Brunswick Road and continue to the Park Street shared path, which takes me to Royal Parade.
''My trip to work is about 10 kilometres, which takes about half an hour.
''It takes me about the same time as driving because I don't need to find a parking place and it's more relaxed than riding or driving on the road."
Next Wednesday, October 12, is Ride to Work Day.
To mark the occasion and to get more cyclists out there, Moonee Valley Council will hold a free breakfast in Queens Park for residents and workers who are on their bikes.
The council estimates 100 people an hour use the Moonee Ponds Creek path to ride to work in the CBD.
Recent improvements at the Nursery Bend section in Strathmore have been welcomed by commuters and recreational riders.
To register for the Moonee Valley breakfast, visit Bicycle Victoria and go into the draw for a number of prizes.
