Moonee Valley upsizes in the obesity stakes

07 Feb, 2012 12:00 AM
FEWER Moonee Valley residents smoke and drink alcohol at weekly 'high-risk' levels than the state average but more of the city's men are obese, a newly released health snapshot shows.

A Victorian population health survey revealed that 17 per cent of the city's men and 13.7 per cent of women were smokers when the data was collected in 2008 for each of the state's 79 municipalities.

This compares with 21.4 per cent of men and 16.9 per cent of women statewide.

More than a third of Moonee Valley's men were overweight - well below the overall Victorian figure of 39.9 per cent, but 23.1 per cent were classified as obese.

Only 12.9 per cent of women and a miserly 2.8 per cent of men had an appropriate vegetable intake.

A lesser number of men, but more women, engaged in sufficient physical activity compared with the rest of Victoria.

Health Minister David Davis said a regional health snapshot of 7500 adults taken showed many areas for improvement.

"Fifty-two per cent of the people surveyed for the report met the recommended minimum daily intake of two or more serves of fruit," he said.

"Less than one in 10 met the target of five or more serves of vegetables each day.

"While the proportion of men and women who were overweight remained constant between 2003 and 2009, the prevalence of obesity increased over the period.

"Fewer than one in five adults aged 18 or over were regular smokers in 2009; that's down from a high of 24.1 per cent in 2001.

"Reduction in smoking rates shows that people, when given support, can and do take control of their own health and lifestyle and take positive steps to improve their wellbeing."

The survey showed just 19.1 per cent of adults abstained from alcohol in the previous 12 months.
