Common decency has prevailed with the decision by Airport West clothing supplier French Connection to remove an offensive billboard FCUK from the Tulla Freeway near the Bolte Bridge.
The sign had been given a planning permit by Moonee Valley council in 2002. Melbourne's Lord Mayor Robert Doyle will get the credit for the sign's removal.
A similar but smaller billboard on the perimeter of Essendon Airport facing northern bound freeway motorists was just as insulting a few years back.
Former Moonee Valley mayor Lydia Kauzlaric was a lone voice in council fighting to have the airport sign removed for the same arguments now sprouted by Lord Mayor Doyle.
Sadly Lydia's ill health forced her to step down from council.
She died soon after, but will no doubt be pleased to know that finally this billboard's cheap obscenity has finally disappeared off the landscapes.
A toast to annual brekkie
Australia's largest pink ribbon breakfast supporting the National Breast Cancer Foundation is expected to again fill the Atrium at Flemington racecourse on October 20.
Last year's breakfast raised $65,000, boosting the tally to more than $225,000 raised since the annual breakfast started seven years ago.
Organiser Di Fincher, named by the foundation this year as Australia's best event organiser, is negotiating for a number of television personalities to attend what has now become one of Moonee Valley's largest fund-raising events.
Ticket prices are unchanged at $50 per person and bookings can be made through Flemington Customer Service on 1300727575.
A life's work honoured
Popular historian Bob Chalmers was awarded a life membership of the Essendon Historical Society last month.
Bob has stepped down as president of the society but will continue to serve on the committee under new president Judy Maddigan.
Essendon born and bred, Bob was a school teacher at many schools including Keilor Heights, Niddrie and Aberfeldie before retiring in 1998.
He was awarded the arts and culture award in the Spirit of Moonee Valley awards in 2004 for his contribution to local history.
On his retirement Bob produced The Annals of Essendon and has since produced three further volumes completing the series from the 1850s to 2000.
The final word...
Why do doctors leave the room while you change? They are going to see you naked anyway.
