Australia Day: Jim Marshall honoured

26 Jan, 2012 04:00 AM
IT’S taken for granted when you post a letter in Australia, no matter how remote your location, within a couple of days it will arrive safe and sound. But, it hasn’t always been the case.

In 1995, as Australia headed full-steam into the modern era, Moonee Ponds resident Jim Marshall was selected by Australia Post to head a team to implement major changes to how the service managed the incredible volume of mail it handled.

By 2000, the system was implemented andover the next decade, Mr Marshall continued to oversee and manage the revolutionary system.

For his tireless work improving the mail system, Mr Marshall has been announced as a recipient of a Public Service Medal as part of this year’s Australia Day Honours.

To Mr Marshall, to Peter Sommerville and all other recipients you honour us every day with your commitment to our community so this honour for each of you is but a small recognition. Without community heroes such as yourselves we would be a poorer lot indeed. And, with deep respect, for those who complain that there are not enough women or locals or average folk... in the honours lists, have you ever nominated anyone? I have successfully nominated a number of people over the years - no protocol states that I can't name them - but you too can nominate a community person for deserved recognition.
