Ascot Vale rider cheats death

24 Jan, 2012 01:00 AM
A FREAK accident is lucky not to have killed a motorcyclist in Ascot Vale last week.

Paramedics treated a man last Wednesday after he was struck and knocked off his motorbike by a falling tree branch just after noon.

Paramedic Ben Coyte said the branch knocked the 48-year-old unconscious.

"We were told the branch dropped from about 12 metres and hit the rider on the head. Thankfully he was wearing a helmet.

''Given the impact of the branch on the man's head we placed a neck brace on him to protect his spine in case he had suffered an injury."

He was taken to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a stable condition.

Mr Coyte said that given the distance the branch fell the rider was very lucky not to have been more seriously injured.
