Ascot Vale has a trugo

17 Jan, 2012 12:00 AM
Momentum is growing behind a push to re-establish the Ascot Vale Trugo Club with a trugo open day planned for Australia Day.

Trugo has its origins in the Newport Railway Workshops, invented by railyard workers in the 1920s.

The game was once a thriving pastime in inner suburban Melbourne but many clubs including Ascot Vale have slowly faded away.

The open day will provide an opportunity for residents to try the Australian game, learn about its history and meet lovers of the game.

A low-impact, low-cost game, trugo can be played by all ages.

The open day is from 11am-3pm January 26 at the Ascot Vale Trugo Club at Maribyrnong Park, between the rotunda and Maribyrnong Road.
